Message from the Dean

Dean William CohenDear University of Maryland Advising Community,

Welcome to the 23rd annual Undergraduate Studies Advising Conference.

I look forward to speaking with many of you at the conference. I know that the workshops and sessions will provide dynamic professional development opportunities for the advising community.

As we welcome a record number of undergraduate students to campus, I am extremely grateful for the work you do in new student orientation, warmly helping new students make a smooth transition to our campus. I hope the conference provides an opportunity for you to recharge as you prepare for the fall semester.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Better Together: Navigating a Changing World.” The conference focuses on the pivotal role that advisors play in guiding our diverse student body in relation to the many cultural, political, and technological shifts happening in our world today. The keynote speaker will be Marybeth Gasman, Judy & Howard Berkowitz Professor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Penn Center for Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI). Dr. Gasman’s research centers on the history of American higher education, MSIs, racism and diversity. My hope is that her presentation will be helpful to you as you engage with students through the advising process.

The conference will be on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, in the Edward St. John building. A detailed agenda will be available later this summer.

Thank you for all you do in support of University of Maryland students. I am confident that this conference will serve as a catalyst for ongoing conversations about how best to advise students in today’s changing world. I look forward to seeing you there.

Best Wishes,

Bill Cohen
