Message from the Dean
Dear University of Maryland Advising Community,
I am pleased to invite you to the 22nd annual Undergraduate Studies Advising Conference. I have had the good fortune to meet many of you this year and to hear about your extraordinary work. This fall we welcomed a much larger number of new students to the campus than we had anticipated. I am grateful to each of you for having met this challenge so generously and for having ensured that every student was ready for classes on day one.
The theme for this year's conference is “Me @ UMD: Finding a Place within the University.” The conference focuses on the pivotal role that advisors play in guiding our diverse student body. University of Maryland Professor of Higher Education Sharon Fries-Britt will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Fries-Britt’s research focuses on high achieving Black students and underrepresented faculty members in higher education. My hope is that her presentation will be helpful to you as you engage students through the advising process.
The opening session begins at 9 am on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, in the Stamp Student Union. A detailed agenda will be available later this summer.
Thank you for all you do to support University of Maryland students. I am confident that this conference will serve as a catalyst for ongoing conversations about how best to advise students in today's changing world.
Dean for Undergraduate Studies
