Calvin Li $1.2 Million Gift in Memory of Calvin Li Will Support UMD Research Fellowship for the Study of Second-Generation Asian Americans
In memory of his son Calvin (left), Dr. Paul Li has donated $1.2 million to the University of Maryland. The donation creates the Calvin J. Li Endowed Fellowship in Asian American Studies to research issues facing second-generation Asian Americans. The inaugural Calvin J. Li Fellow is K. Anh Do. She is currently a researcher with the University of Nebraska's Parenting Across Cultures Study. About the Calvin J. Li Endowed Fellowship.

Donald De AlwisStamps Foundation Fully Funds 3 Honors College Students
University of Maryland Maryland student Donald De Alwis' (left) passion to protect the environment through medicine and his love of spending time in nature culminated in a video project in 10th grade on water pollution in the Anacostia River thatwon first place in C-Span's StudentCam documentary competition. He is one of three undergraduates whose studies will be funded by the Stamps Foundation. More about Stamps Foundation Scholars

DescriptionGrant to Academic Achievement Programs Helps Students Dress for Success
The importance of making a positive first impression, especially during an interview, is recognized in the Academic Achievement Programs use of a generous gift from Steve Leonard (IVSP '78) to provide several AAP students with new business suits and outfits (such as AAP student George Akparewa left). Mr. Leonard has been an active supporter of the University of Maryland for many years. In addition, he has contributed both his resources and time to support students in Letters and Sciences and for scholarships to Individual Studies students. DescriptionAsian American Studies Program Shares in $500K National Science Foundation Grant for Extensive Survey of Asian Americans in the United States
Professor Janelle Wong (left), director of the Asian American Studies Program leads UMD's team in the study to survey Asian Americans on a range of social, cultural, and political attitudes and experiences. The study expands upon the National Asian American Survey, which was founded in 2008 and repeated in 2012. More about the grant and project.

Just Mercy book coverJust Mercy, by Bryan Stevens is UMD's First Year Book Selection for 2016-17
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption is the New York Times best seller that examines racial bias and the criminal justice system in the United States. The First Year Book Program chooses a book each academic year that provides first-year students, faculty, and staff from across disciplines with an engaging and shared intellectual experience. Bryan Stevenson will be on campus November 1, 2016 to deliver a lecture about his book.

Heidi Bruce is New Undergraduate Studies Director of Development
The Office of Undergraduate Studies welcomed Heidi Bruce as their new Director of Development. Ms. Bruce comes to UMD from appointments at The Ohio State University, George Mason University, and most recently for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). A record 128 students enrolled in the two programs this past year. To better honor our remarkable participants.Reflecting the ongoing empowerment and fellowship provided by the two programs, they are now officially renamed "Federal Fellows" and "Global Fellows in Washington, DC."
